Say “hello” to Andressa.
Tell us a little about yourself and your journey at Scopely.
I am a tech team lead for the “Star Trek™ Fleet Command” team, currently based in Dublin, and this is my first experience living abroad. I moved from Brazil to Ireland just under two years ago to start working as a Game Server Engineer at Scopely. Despite having been here for a while now, I still love the challenges and new experiences that come with working on such a massive project. It seems like there's always something new to learn and that's what keeps things so exciting!
What are you currently working on and how does your work impact the company?
I'm part of the Feature Team, so I work closely with ideation, development, and release of new game functionalities. This helps keep the playerbase engaged and excited about our game. Constantly giving a fresh feel to the game, it makes for a unique experience every time.
What does diversity in gaming mean to you?
Diversity in gaming to me is all about building community. It means recognizing that gamers come from all walks of life, have different abilities, and come with unique perspectives and experiences. It is not only about character representation, but also about having a diverse team behind the game. Providing diverse content that players can connect to, and creating an environment where they can see themselves reflected in games. Building stronger communities that bring people together and allow them to share their passions.
Which Scopely culture tenet resonates most with you?
ITERATE TO GREATNESS. It helps me keep things small, but still seek a huge impact. Sometimes, as developers, we want to find the perfect solution on the first try, which can paralyze us rather than help us move forward. Each piece counts, and it is all of them together in the right place that delivers the epic experience.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
"It's not because you can be better that you aren't already good." Sometimes we work so hard on improving ourselves and our work that we don't realize how well we're doing and how we can help others along the way. Celebrating small achievements is also important to keep going.
What was the last good book you read?
Recently, I started reading Octavia Butler's books and I am obsessed. If you like science fiction, give “Dawn” or “The Parable of the Sower” a read. I love how Butler is able to make the most terrifying situations come to life. She takes her time to tell a story, making everything even more realistic and enjoyable. From climate change apocalypses to alien invasions, she is able to capture the human experience so well that it transports you to the situation and makes you feel like you're there.
